Research of an early family in Waipawa, Central Hawke's Bay by Carol Lambert

it was the year 1874 when the Jensen families emigrated from Denmark to New Zealand. They travelled from Copenhagan to London where they embarked on the Ship "Winchester" and travelled to new Zealand. The date recorded as the 14th April, 1874.

They disembarked at Port Ahuriri, Napier, Hawkes Bay and proceeded ( I am told on foot) to Makaretu - West of Waipawa - a distance of approximantely 50 kilometers. They had been allotted 40 acres of land to farm.

It was probably two brothers aged 45 and 41, their wives and chidlren.

The daughter Anna Sophia, husband Adolf Arpard Breuer and children moved to Waipawa in July 1887 as found in the Makaretu school records.

Their children attended Waipawa Primary school and eventually married in and around the district as stated in the family tree image about Hemig Jensen.

Hemig Jensen married Ane Christine (unknown) about 1852 in Denmark. Also known as Hemming and Anna Christina.

Hemig born in Skellerup, Denmark.

Ane Christine born in Bakkebolle, Vordinborg, Praesto, Denmark.

The daughter and two sons born the same place as their mother, Ane Christine.

Having spoken with descendants of these two families it seems that the children of Hemig and Ane Jensen took Hemmingsen as their surname whereas Peter and Kirsten Jensen and their children retained the Jensen surname.
